UNDO is used to rollback transactions. REDO records changes to the original data, and is important for transactions that are not committed at the time of a crash or failure.
To create new redo log groups and members, you must have the ALTER DATABASE system privilege. A database can have up to MAXLOGFILES groups. To create a new group of redo log files, use the SQL statement ALTER DATABASE with the ADD LOGFILE clause.
UNDO is used to rollback transactions. REDO records changes to the original data, and is important for transactions that are not committed at the time of a crash or failure. REDO is used to roll forward transactions.
The principle differences between undo and redo logging are: 1. Undo logging cancels the effects of incomplete transactions and ignores committed ones; redo logging ignores incomplete transactions and redoes committed ones as necessary. 2.
The most crucial structure for recovery operations is the redo log, which consists of two or more preallocated files that store all changes made to the database as they occur. Every instance of an Oracle Database has an associated redo log to protect the database in case of an instance failure.
An undo log record contains information about how to undo the latest change by a transaction to a clustered index record. If another transaction needs to see the original data as part of a consistent read operation, the unmodified data is retrieved from undo log records.
Rule of thumb formula: 63.8 MB per minute = 3.74 GB per hour. Redo Generation Rate: 1.1 MB per second = 66 MB per minute = 3.87 GB per hour.
Whenever something changes in a datafile, Oracle records the change in the redo log. The name redo log indicates its purpose: If the database crashes, the RDBMS can redo (re-process) all changes on datafiles which will take the database data back to the state it was when the last redo record was written.
