The CSV filetype is a plain text file that holds lists of data and is useful for moving information between different software. Sometimes when opening a CSV file in Microsoft Excel the data appears jumbled such as in this example. This data is from an Atlas Copco MTF6000 controller and contains torque verification data. By examining the text I can see that the data is separated using semicolons, not commas. This would explain why Excel isnt properly displaying the data. To fix this issue we must open the Text Import Wizard. In older versions of Excel this is done by opening the CSV file using the File Import action, but in this newer version we must manually open the file by selecting File, then opening it from the disk or recent files list. Now that the Text Import Wizard is open we must tell Excel to use the Delimited data type which separates the text into fields using certain characters. Select Delimited and click next. If you close the CSV file without saving it, the AutoRecover version can also be kept. For example, if you close a CSV file without saving it, you will see a Document Recovery section on the left side after you open that file again. You can open the AutoRecover version to see the changes you have made.
Resolution Open the CSV in Notepad. (Dont use Excel to open the CSV file because the quotation marks may not be visible in Excel). On the Edit menu, select Replace. Incorrect Delimiters: Errors occur when the delimiter in the CSV file doesnt match the expected delimiter of the importing system. Fix: Ensure the delimiter used (comma, semicolon, etc.) matches the systems requirements. You can often specify the delimiter during the import process.
Make sure they are enclosed in quotation marks. Check the file for extra spaces between delimiters, at the end of lines, etc. Check for extra columns or blank lines.
