Redo entries record data that you can use to reconstruct all changes made to the database, including the undo segments. Therefore, the redo log also protects rollback data.
The redo function restores any actions that were previously undone using an undo. Some people may refer to this feature as a reverse undo. For example, if you typed a word, and then deleted it using an undo, the redo function restores the word you deleted (undid).
Redo log file size Dell EMC recommends redo log group members sized between 512 MB to 2 GB for demanding OLTP systems. If the DBA is concerned that a larger redo log group will result in insufficient switching during non-peak period, the archivelagtarget parameter should be set to force periodic switching.
Redo Log Contents Redo log files are filled with redo records. A redo record, also called a redo entry, is made up of a group of change vectors, each of which is a description of a change made to a single block in the database.
For a normal rollback, ie, youve issued the command, well get all the information from the UNDO. During a database recovery, well use REDO information to correctly resurrect the UNDO information, so that we can then undo any uncommitted transactions at the point of recovery.
Redo entries contain the information necessary to reconstruct, or redo, changes made to the database by INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE, CREATE, ALTER or DROP operations. Redo entries can be used for database recovery if necessary.
The minimum size permitted for a redo log file is 4 MB. See Also: Your operating systemspecific Oracle documentation. The default size of redo log files is operating system dependent.
Redo is the information Oracle records in online (and archived) redo log files in order to replay your transaction in the event of a failure. Undo is the information Oracle records in the undo segments in order to reverse, or roll back, your transaction.
Redo log files are operating system files used by Oracle to maintain logs of all transactions performed against the database. The primary purpose of these log files is to allow Oracle to recover changes made to the database in the case of a failure.
What is Oracle Redo Logs? The Redo Log, which consists of two or more preallocated files that contain all changes made to the database as they occur, is the most essential component for recovery operations. Every Oracle Database instance has a redo log to safeguard the database in the event of an instance failure.
