Sometimes, restarting your Mac will fix the system or Spotlight errors that lead to your Spotlight not working. You can open the Apple menu and select Restart to reboot your Mac computer. Then, try to use Spotlight Search again to check if it is active again.
Spotlight will now start to reindex your Mac. Depending upon the amount of stuff you have on your Macs hard drive and the speed of your Macs processor this reindexing process could take anywhere from 30 minutes to many, many hours. Check the Spotlight settings: In the Spotlight preferences, ensure that the Search Results tab is selected at the top. Enable indexing for desired locations: In the Search Results tab, youll see a list of categories on the left, like Applications, Documents, etc.
Choose Apple menu System Settings, then click General in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.) Click Transfer or Reset on the right, then click Erase All Contents and Settings.
Fixes for Spotlight indexing slow From the main Apple menu, go to System Settings Siri Spotlight. Click the Spotlight Privacy button at the bottom of the page. To reindex a particular folder or disk, drag its icon into the window of locations that Spotlight is prevented from searching.
click Siri Spotlight in the sidebar. Scroll down and click Spotlight Privacy. Add and then remove items from the locations list. Your Mac will reindex Spotlight.
Open System Preferences. Open Spotlight and select the Privacy tab. Drag the Macintosh HD drive (startup disk) to the Spotlight window and click OK when prompted. Spotlight will start reindexing the drive. Depending on the drive size it might take a while.
