what do abnormal pap smear results mean its an excellent question that I get from many of my patients first of all it depends on your age your frequency of pap smears in your past medical history but in general a pap smear is two parts one part is the cells of the cervix whether or not they are normal or varying levels of abnormal and then based on your age we test from human papillomavirus HPV this is a virus that is sexually transmitted and part of the pap result tells us whether or not there is or is not a virus based on the cells and the presence of the virus your gynecologist can tell you what your abnormal fat results mean my name is Dr Gilman Nissan with North Jersey Gynecology like and follow us for more information on Womens Health and Wellness

An inadequate cervical smear test result simply means that the swab sample did not contain enough cells to provide an accurate result. Youll need to repeat the smear test, usually in three months time, to give the surface of your cervix enough time to regenerate enough cells.
As a Pap smear is only a screening test, you may need to undergo additional diagnostic tests to determine if cancerous cells are present. Typically, the diagnostic tests used to identify cancer cells in the cervix include a colposcopy and a scraping of the cervix.
Repeat testingFor patients under 25, a repeat Pap test may be done in 6 months or 1 year. For patients 25 or older, repeat HPV testing or co-testing (having the HPV test and Pap test done at the same time) is recommended as a follow-up to some abnormal test results.
When you hear that your Pap smear results were abnormal, you might feel some anxiety. Although worry is a common and normal reaction, its important to know that your test results merely showed that you have an infection or unusual cells known as dysplasia. None of this means you have cancer.
Women ages 21 to 29 should get a Pap test every three years. Women ages 30 to 65 should have a Pap test combined with an HPV test every five years. Some women with certain conditions may need more frequent testing, including women with a history of cervical cancer, HIV/AIDS or a weakened immune system.
About 5% of all Pap tests will be abnormal, meaning that the sample contains atypical cervical cells. However, the majority of these cells are not cancerous or even precancerous. An abnormal Pap test result does not mean cancer, but it does require follow-up to rule out the possibility of cancer.
Treatment choices include: Cone biopsy. Loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP), which uses a thin, low-voltage electrified wire loop to cut out abnormal cervical cells. Cryotherapy, which destroys abnormal cervical cells by freezing them. Laser therapy, which uses a laser beam to destroy abnormal cervical cells.
Pap screening may end at age 65 if the Pap history is unremarkable and the patient is low risk. low risk women 30 and above may go every 3 years if Pap only; or 5 years if cotesting. Risk factors that should be considered are HPV infection, STDs, HIV, smoking, new sexual partners, previous SIL or immunosuppression.
Following an abnormal Pap smear, your next step is additional testing. Dr. Tajzoy may suggest redoing the Pap smear to see if results come back the same.
