To get the last inserted ID in SQL, you typically use the SCOPEIDENTITY() function in SQL Server. This function returns the last identity value inserted into an identity column in the same scope (session, batch, or stored procedure).
One of the most common ways to retrieve the insert ID is by using the LASTINSERTID() function. This function returns the auto-generated ID of the most recent insert operation within the current session. INSERT INTO tablename (column1, column2) VALUES (value1, value2); SELECT LASTINSERTID();
SQL SCOPEIDENTITY() function We use SCOPEIDENTITY() function to return the last IDENTITY value in a table under the current scope. A scope can be a module, trigger, function or a stored procedure. We can consider SQL SCOPEIDENTITY() function similar to the @@IDENTITY function, but it is limited to a specific scope.
If the table is empty, simply use ALTER TABLE to reset the auto increment value. ALTER TABLE yourtablename AUTOINCREMENT = 1; This sets the next auto increment value to 1 (or any number you choose).
Actually you cannot alter the existing identity column in a table like other regular columns ( alter table alter column). You may need to use the DBCC CHECKIDENT(tableName, RESEED, NEWRESEEDVALUE) to update the Identity column value for new records .
To get the identity value in SQL Server, there are 3 different options or system functions as below: SCOPEIDENTITY() @@IDENTITY. IDENTCURRENT(TableName)
When inserting a row in a stored procedure, always use SCOPEIDENTITY() if you want to get the ID of the row that was just inserted. A common error is to use @@IDENTITY, which returns the most recently created identity for your current connection, not necessarily the identity for the recently added row in a table.
Reset the Identity Value Using the DBCC CHECKIDENT Method : Here, to reset the Identity column in SQL Server you can use DBCC CHECKIDENT method. Syntax : DBCC CHECKIDENT (tablename, RESEED, newvalue); Note : If we reset the existing records in the table and insert new records, then it will show an error.
