Other things can cause cells to look abnormal, including irritation, some infections (such as a yeast infection), growths (such as polyps in the uterus), and changes in hormones that occur during pregnancy or menopause. Although these things may make cervical cells look abnormal, they are not related to cancer.
How common is an abnormal Pap smear result? Abnormal Pap smear results are common. ing to the National Institutes of Health, 3.8% of Pap tests come back abnormal. Most of the abnormal cells found during a Pap test are the result of a cervical or vaginal infection and are not cancerous.
We know that about 1 in 20 people get a cervical screening result of cell changes. Cell changes happen when our cells start behaving in a way they should not, but many go back to normal without treatment. Sometimes treatment is needed to make sure cell changes dont develop into cervical cancer.
It is very common to have an abnormal smear (one in twelve smears are not normal), but it is extremely rare for this abnormality to be cancer.
Possible causes of an abnormal Pap smear include vaginal inflammation or an active vaginal infection. You may also have abnormal test results if you had sex prior to your procedure. In some cases, abnormal Pap results are inconclusive for no reason at all.
Most of the time, cervical cell changes (abnormal cells) dont come back after treatment. However, sometimes they do and may need further treatment.
About 5% of all Pap tests will be abnormal, meaning that the sample contains atypical cervical cells. However, the majority of these cells are not cancerous or even precancerous. An abnormal Pap test result does not mean cancer, but it does require follow-up to rule out the possibility of cancer.
Women ages 21 to 29 should get a Pap test every three years. Women ages 30 to 65 should have a Pap test combined with an HPV test every five years. Some women with certain conditions may need more frequent testing, including women with a history of cervical cancer, HIV/AIDS or a weakened immune system.
