How many times can an ACL be repaired? There is no real limit to the amount of times the ACL can be reconstructed. However, each successive surgery may become technically challenging due to bone loss. This requires that your surgeon have expertise in complex revision ACL surgery.
Swelling: Swelling around the knee joint is another common symptom of graft failure. The swelling may be localized or diffuse and may worsen after physical activity or prolonged standing. Decreased Range of Motion: Graft failure can lead to stiffness and decreased range of motion in the knee joint.
Every surgically reconstructed anterior cruciate ligament can retear. The risk ranges from one or two percent to more than 20 percent. The replacement ligament (graft) chosen for your surgery can docHubly increase or decrease your chance of a retear.
Treatment of a retear of the ACL is similar to treatment the first injury. Partial tears of the ACL graft can be treated with our Perc-ACLR procedure. Complete retracted tears would require another surgery.
If you suffer an ACL tear, reducing your chance of re-injuring yourself should be of paramount importance. The risk of re-tearing the ACL is 5%, but with many exceptions.
The best means to determine if an ACL reconstruction graft is torn is by either the patients history or by a good clinical exam. Unfortunately, MRI scans are not very effective for determining the function of an ACL graft.
The decision to proceed with a second ACL surgery depends on the patient, the condition and stability of his or her knee, the desired activity level and imaging findings. Patients are advised to seek out a specialist with ample experience in revision ACL surgery for the best chance of a good outcome.
Instability in a knee that has been surgically corrected with a new ACL graft is being linked to secondary structures that might have been damaged during the initial incident that ruptured the ACL.
