We were asked to change a date that was already engraved on a metal watch. Not all engraving mistakes can be completely eliminated, but many can be repaired to the point of being practically unnoticeable. The easiest way to repair an engraving mistake is to simply cover it up with a slightly larger design.
With time and wear, some engravings will fade away, especially those on soft metals such as gold or silver, which can lose metal over time and make an engraving harder to see over the years. Thats not a problem, though; engravings can always be redone.
Removing an Engraving To remove an engraving, a jeweler has to laser the metal at the area of the engraving, blasting it to level out the texture of the metal. Once this is done, the jeweler polishes the item and restores it to a smooth, blank surface.
Once we have laser cut and engraved the piece, we then can start to infill the engraving with paint using a spatula. We get a good blob of paint and spread it over the areas which are engraved. A lot like when youre icing a cake.

If the engraving is misspelled, you will probably have to erase it entirely. If there is a smaller mistake, you can fix it by engraving over it, adding to the design or erasing a small part of the design.

Remove the engraving Beginning with the finest sandpaper start to buff the engraved area, stopping to wash and buff dry at regular intervals and increasing the grit until the engraving is gone. If even the most coarse grit sandpaper is not removing the engraving, use a metal file.
To remove an engraving, it has to be lasered off the metal in the area of the inscription to level out the texture of the metal. After the engraving is lasered off the ring will need to be polished to restore the ring to a smooth blank surface.
You may have made a mistake when engraving or wish to give the engraved item a different look. For whatever reason, you can remove the engraving with sandpaper.
