An MOA number listed on a red dot sight refers to how large the dot will appear on a target that is 100 yards away. Since we know that 1 MOA is 1 inch at 100 yards, a red dot listed as 3 MOA will appear 3 inches in diameter at 100 yards, 6 inches at 200 yards, and 9 inches at 300 yards.
Out of the 15 optics Ive tested, I believe the Aimpoint PRO fits these criterias and is the best AR-15 pistol optic on the market. The Aimpoint PRO is the only combat-proven red dot that is used by law enforcements and Navy SEALs.
Holographic sights are superior to reflex sights because they do not superimpose the reticle onto glass by reflecting it. Instead the holographic sight displays the reticle in 3D space directly in front of the shooter.
4 MOA means that the dot will be approximately 4 inches wide at 100 yards. That means, at 100 yards, the dot will cover 4 inches of your target. At 50 yards, the dot will be 2 inches wide; at 25 yards it will be 1 inch wide, etc.
The red dot of your optic should be slightly above the front sight. Otherwise, there is a strong possibility for your target to be obscured. When you align the iron sight to the center of the sight, its known as absolute co-witness; another setup is one-third of the optic, which is known as low 1/3.
The Aimpoint Comp series of sights are soldier-tested, combat-proven, and widely touted by professional users as the highest quality red dot optic available. For over 20 years, the U.S. Armed Forces has chosen the Comp series as the M68CCO Close Combat Optic.
The United States Army, Air Force and Marine Corps field the Trijicon TA31RCO ACOG, a 4 magnification model with a 32mm objective lens (432), with specially designed ballistic compensating reticles that are fiber optic tritium illuminated, for the M4 carbine and M16A4 rifle.
Therefore, the smaller the dots MOA, the harder to see. A larger MOA dot will be incredibly easy to see but may cover too much of the target at further distances to get an accurate shot. Smaller dots1 to 2.5 MOAare used for precise shots at longer distances.
Many of the militarys special forces including Navy SEALs use both EOTech and Aimpoint optics. Based on research, they use preferred models such as the Aimpoint Comp M2/M4s and EOTechs 553 Holographic Sight. They also use other companies like Trijicon as well.
Depending on the type of red dot sight, these adjustments can be made using either turrets or buttons to adjust the elevation or windage on your red dot sight. Elevation adjustments move your reticle vertically (up and down), and windage adjustments move your reticle horizontally (left and right).
