What is a Redo Log Buffer? The redo log buffer is a part of the Shared Global Area (SGA). This shared memory structure holds information about changes made to the database, called redo. Redo is generated by each transaction in the database as it makes a change (e.g. insert, update, delete, or any DDL operations).
Archive logs are archived redo(online) log files. In redo log files are all changes that happened to your data. If your database is in archivelog mode, than redo logs cant be overwritten, they are archived in some other location when they are full. Redo and archive logs are used in various database recovery scenarios.
The log buffer size depends on the number of redo strands in the system. One redo strand is allocated for every 16 CPUs and has a default size of 2 MB. Oracle allocates a minimum of 2 redo strands per instance.
Redo entries contain the information necessary to reconstruct, or redo, changes made to the database by INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE, CREATE, ALTER or DROP operations. Redo entries can be used for database recovery if necessary.
Redo log files are filled with redo records. A redo record, also called a redo entry, is made up of a group of change vectors, each of which is a description of a change made to a single block in the database.
By default, an Oracle database is configured with three redo logs of 50 MB each. RSA Identity Governance Lifecycle requires six redo logs of at least 800 MB each.
So for the recovery purpose redo log files will have exact committed data or recoverable data. redo log buffers can have the commit and non commit data for roll forward and roll backward .
The most crucial structure for recovery operations is the redo log, which consists of two or more preallocated files that store all changes made to the database as they occur. Every instance of an Oracle Database has an associated redo log to protect the database in case of an instance failure.
Too small, and the frequent log switches tie-up the LGWR, ARCH and DBWR background processes. Too large and you risk losing data during an instance crash. As a general rule of thumb, Oracle recommends that you size your online redo logs not to switch more then 5 times per hour during peak DML times.
