Treatment of a retear of the ACL is similar to treatment the first injury. Partial tears of the ACL graft can be treated with our Perc-ACLR procedure. Complete retracted tears would require another surgery.
Most ACL reconstructions are done under general anesthesia. So youll be asleep during the surgery and not feel anything. The surgery usually takes 2 to 2 hours, and you wont need to stay in the hospital overnight.
A revision ACL reconstruction is a second surgery needed to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament. ACL revision surgery is a more challenging operation for the orthopedic surgeon than a primary reconstruction.
It can be an incredibly difficult and frustrating situation to have a repeat ACL injury. For those who have symptoms or would like to continue participation in certain sports, revision ACL reconstruction is an option. This requires removing the re-injured ligament and replacing it with a new graft.
The risk of re-tearing the ACL is 5%, but with many exceptions. There are several ways to limit the possibility of re-injury: Follow all recommendations provided by our orthopedic surgeon post surgery. Carefully adhere to the physical therapy rehab protocols.
There are a number of surgical options for reconstructing the ACL. The type of procedure done may vary from patient to patient depending on a specific surgeons preference as well as factors unique to an individual patient. The surgical procedure is most commonly performed using arthroscopic techniques.
How many times can an ACL be repaired? There is no real limit to the amount of times the ACL can be reconstructed. However, each successive surgery may become technically challenging due to bone loss. This requires that your surgeon have expertise in complex revision ACL surgery.
