Redo logs contain transaction information in case the database is interrupted prior to writing data changes from memory to the database.
Whenever something changes in a datafile, Oracle records the change in the redo log. The name redo log indicates its purpose: If the database crashes, the RDBMS can redo (re-process) all changes on datafiles which will take the database data back to the state it was when the last redo record was written.
You can use operating system commands to relocate redo logs, then use the ALTER DATABASE statement to make their new names (locations) known to the database. In some cases, you may want to drop an entire group of redo log members.
The difference between bin log and redo log. The content is different: redo log is a physical log and the content is based on the Page on disk, bin-log content is binary and depending on the binlogformat parameter, may be based on SQL statements, on the data itself, or a mixture of the two.
UNDO is used to rollback transactions. REDO records changes to the original data, and is important for transactions that are not committed at the time of a crash or failure. REDO is used to roll forward transactions.
A log switch is the point at which the database stops writing to one redo log file and begins writing to another. Normally, a log switch occurs when the current redo log file is completely filled and writing must continue to the next redo log file.
A redo log is created by taking a virtual machine snapshot, which contains both disk data and virtual machine state. On hosted disk only, VixDiskLibCreateChild() creates a redo log without virtual machine state. You could write a simple application to create redo logs, or snapshots on managed disk, at 3:00 AM nightly.
