You cant delete a snapshot of the root device of an EBS volume used by a registered AMI. This consideration applies even if the registered AMI is deprecated or disabled. You must first deregister the AMI before you can delete the snapshot. For more information, see Deregister your AMI.
Both the EBS snapshot and the AMI are automatically stored on Amazon S3 which is known for being highly durable and reliable. It isnt possible to restore or recover a deleted or deregistered AMI. However, you can create a new, identical AMI using one of the following: Amazon Elastic Block Store (Amazon EBS) snapshots that were created as backups.
To copy the shared AMI, see Cross-account copying. Note: Sharing an AMI from different Regions isnt available. You can copy the AMI and then share it or launch it in a new Region. For more information, see How do I create an AMI in one AWS Region and then copy it to another?
When you deregister the AMI, it is simply deleted. However, all the snapshots that were attached to the AMI remain and need to be deleted manually. The diagram below illustrates this concept. If you do not manually delete snapshots after deregistering an AMI, they will continue to incur costs.
