A Bill of Sale is not legally required for selling a vehicle in North Carolina, but its a good idea to create one for both you and the buyer. The Bill of Sale can be helpful if problems arise when the buyer goes to transfer the title or register the vehicle in their name.
Titling of vessels is mandatory in North Carolina. Anyone who purchases or transfers ownership of a motorized vessel or sailboat 14 feet or longer or who owns a personal watercraft (PWC), also known as jet ski, must have a title for the vessel. Vessels documented with the USCG are exempt from obtaining a title.
Before leaving the dock, ensure your boat is equipped with oars, a working fire extinguisher, a throwable PFD, sound-producing devices, flame arrestors, proper ventilation, exhaust mufflers, and navigation lights.
What information should you include? The names, ID information (if required), and contact details for both the buyer and the seller. The boats information, including VIN, make, model, year, and registration number. The price of the boat. Conditions of the sale, including any warranties or as is status.
In North Carolina, bills of sale presented for registration of a motor vehicle or vessel must be docHubd. Certification/Signature: The signature of the seller and/or buyer, depending on the form, finalizes the transfer. In-person signatures are always valid.
Your bill of sale must be docHubd or signed by two witnesses. New or used boats purchased outside of this state must show proof of 7% Mississippi sales tax paid if this was not paid at time of purchase.
To transfer a licence to your name, submit the following documents: a completed Form 84-0172E, Application for Pleasure Craft Licence; proof of ownership of the pleasure craft; a signed photocopy of a government issued ID.
Vessel owners are not required to use this form, but are encouraged to provide at least the information below when selling their vessel. For questions regarding selling a vessel, call 800-628-3773.
