ZIP codes in the USA have five numbers and no letters - and some have five digits, a hyphen, then four more digits, in this format: ##### or #####-#### (five or nine digits). The first five digits are essential, while the additional four digits offer more precise location information.
What is a zip code? The first digit: this number refers to the national area, or defined group of states. The second and third digit: this set of numbers signifies a region within this group, such as a large city. The fourth and fifth digit: these numbers represent the associate post office or delivery area of a region.
A United States postal code, for example, might be either five digits or five digits followed a hyphen (dash) and another four digits (12345-1234). If you are validating US postal codes, allow for both conditions. The following rule validates a field that can be five digits, five digits + dash + 4 digits, or blank.
1 Expert Answer Always make your zip codes text. Zip codes on the east coast often start with a leading zero, and is a user types a leading zero into a number field, the leading zero(es) will get dropped!
Write POSTAL CODES in uppercase letters and separate the first 3 characters from the last 3 characters with 1 space. (No hyphens please. These can cause delays) Place the municipality, province or territory and postal code on the same line.
The correct format for a numeric ZIP+4 code is five digits, a hyphen, and four digits. The first five digits represent the 5-digit ZIP Code; the sixth and seventh digits (the first two after the hyphen) identify an area known as a sector; the eighth and ninth digits identify a smaller area known as a segment.
A ZIP+4 Code uses the basic five-digit code plus four additional digits to identify a geographic segment within the five-digit delivery area, such as a city block, a group of apartments, an individual high-volume receiver of mail, a post office box, or any other unit that could use an extra identifier to aid in
