The characters are the less-than and greater-than signs (because XML would not know where the elements start and finish), the apostrophe / single quote, the double-quote, and the ampersand (because the entity references start with an ampersand).
We do this by directly referencing the Unicode code point in decimal or hexadecimal form. These are standard XML entities meaning that theyre prefixed with an character and suffixed with a ; character. Decimal codepoints are then prefixed with a # character and hexadecimal ones with #x.
Inserting special characters Directly type the special character (if this is possible) or copy it from a third-party application (such as Windows Character Map utility), then paste it in the XML document. Click on the character displayed in a character palette of the Characters tool.
