The \\ command tells LaTeX to start a new line. It has an optional argument, extra-space , that specifies how much extra vertical space is to be inserted before the next line. This can be a negative amount.
\\ is for making in-paragraph line breaks so the whole point is that it produces a normal baseline to baseline space, you can use \\[5pt] to add an additional space where needed.
Sometimes you might want to end a line early, or have a blank line to separate out the content, and you can do this with \\ . This tells LaTeX to break the line, but it doesnt start a new paragraph. By default most LaTeX documents will indent the first line of the paragraph.
Inserting a New line within LaTeX Text In order to forcefully insert multiple new lines into a LaTeX document you would need to insert \\ multiple times at the end of line (see listing 1).
The ideal way to add chapters to your LaTeX document while writing a book is by creating a separate file for each chapter. These individual chapter files do not need a preamble. All you need to add at the beginning of each chapter file is the name of the chapter using the \chapter{..} command.
Use \\ to tell LaTeX where to start a new line in a long title.
There are three commands here that work the same in the example: \\ (two backslashes) \newline. \hfill \break.
