During color grading, the image remains smooth because of all the data values it has available to it. This is much like a slide: smooth and consistent. In Log, there is a certain amount of data latitude to grade with, especially in higher bit rates, however, there is a point where the image begins to break.
Normal video footage is shot in the REC. 709 colour gamut, but material recorded in S-Log is recorded in the much wider S-Gamut colour space. Put simply, the wider the colour gamut, the more colour information can be recorded and the more vibrant and realistic your images will look.
The many advantages of shooting in S-Log Shoot with a combination of S-Log and S-Gamut, and your material can retain a wider color gamut, dynamic range, and tonal range than with traditional techniques. This image information provides exceptional flexibility in color grading, as you give scenes the look you envisioned.
S-Log is a gamma curve designed to record and transmit as much of the information recorded by your cameras sensor as possible. S-Log breathes life into your images by preserving the wide color gamut and dynamic range recorded by the sensor.
The benefit of shooting in log is that your video files will have a higher dynamic range. Put simply, this means your camera will capture more detail in the bright and dark areas of your image than with a standard gamma curve. You also have more scope for color grading your video files in post-production.
First and foremost is the fact that shooting in log isnt always necessary. Because log is primarily designed to maximize dynamic range, it makes sense to shoot log in tricky lighting conditions where you expect there to be both extremely bright and dark parts in the image.
So how do we expose LOG correctly? Expose to the right (meaning to the right of the histogram i.e slight over exposure). Use an 18 percent grey card. Send a normal REC 709 curve to the monitor/eye peice and expose that as you normally would.
Shooting in LOG offers a much broader dynamic range and color depth compared to compressed video formats. While compressed formats are smaller in file size and easier to handle, they lose docHub image detail and color information during the compression process.
