Create and use character styles in Pages on Mac Select the words you want to format. In the Format sidebar, click the Style button near the top. In the Font section, click the pop-up menu next to Character Styles, then select a style.
Press a modifier key, or a combination of modifier keys, to see special characters or symbols you can type. For example, press and hold the Option key or the Option and Shift keys. An orange outline appears around dead keys, modifier keys that can be pressed with another key to enter a letter with a diacritical mark.
You can use the Character Viewer to add special characters and symbols to text, such as math symbols, Latin characters, and pictographs. Click in the text where you want to place the character, then choose Edit Emoji Symbols (or press Control-Command-Space bar). The Character Viewer appears where you clicked.
