Do not abbreviate the city and state for a formal envelope and make sure and include a return address. And if youre sending out formal invitations, holiday or Christmas cards, Gottsman says to avoid using labels. Want more pointers? Keep scrolling for a helpful guide on proper mailing etiquette.
Write Delivery Address Recipients full name or company name. Apartment or suite number. Full street address. City, State, and ZIP+4 Code.
If youre sending mail within the United States, its not required to put the country, but it never hurts to include this information. On the same side of the envelope, write your return address with your own information in the top left corner in the same order as the recipient information above.
To allow space for the ZIP Code in the last line of an address, state names needed to be abbreviated. Previously, the Post Office Department preferred that state names be written in full, to avoid confusion.
When writing an address all on one line or in a sentence, use a comma before the following elements: the apartment or suite number, the city, and the state. Its not necessary to use a comma before the zip code. Her address is 3425 Stone Street, Apt. 2A, Jacksonville, FL 39404.
Basic U.S. addresses The addressee (first line) Delivery address (second line) City name, state abbreviation, and ZIP Code (third line) Country name (fourth line)
Note: When the name of a state is used as a portion of the Primary Street Name, the standard twoletter abbreviation is recommended as depicted in the previous examples. However, when the state name is the complete Primary Street Name, such as OKLAHOMA AVE, then the state name should be spelled out completely.
