Dip the cloth into the stain and apply it all over the wood using small movements. Wait for the stain to soak into the wood and then wipe off the excess with a clean cloth. If you want to achieve a darker colour, consider applying multiple coats. Finish off by applying a wood finish for long-lasting protection.
If you are staining bare wood for an exterior project with a solid stain, you generally do not need to prime before staining. Solid stains are generally self-priming. natural tannins in the wood from bleeding through to the topcoat of your project. Make sure the wood surface is clean and ready to accept the primer.
On most raw woods, start sanding in the direction of the grain using a #120-150 grit paper before staining and work up to #220 grit paper. Soft woods such as pine and alder: start with #120 and finish with no finer than #220 (for water base stains) and 180 grit for oil base stains.
Wood Preparation Youll need to prepare your wood for staining. Wood must be dry and cleaned of dirt, grease, wax, polish, marks and old finishes. Start with a medium grade of sandpaper (e.g., #120) and gradually work your way to a finer grade (e.g., #220).
Dos Always prepare the wood with a light sanding. Apply Minwax Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner to ensure an even stain color (see Wood Preparation for other tips). Stir the can thoroughly. Test any stain you are considering. Apply a second coat.
Apply oil-based stains with a paintbrush or clean rag. Apply water-based stains with a foam brush or synthetic bristle brush. For deep grain woods, work the stain into the grain by working in a circular motion. Otherwise, apply the stain evenly in the direction of the wood grain.
Q: Do I need to clean my deck before I stain it? A: Yes. The answer is simple enough, but it really should be remembered that its important to remove all dirt and contaminants from the surface of wood to ensure proper stain penetration and maximum durability of wood stains.
Although wood conditioner is necessary for applying stain, you dont need to use it on every wood-related project.
