You must make sure that the wood youre intending to varnish is dry, clean and in sound condition. It must also be free of mill glaze. Depending on the condition of your wood, you may need to remove any old varnish or stain.
Once you have finished your staining you will need to apply a coat of clear, either varnish or polyurethane, without a coat of clear the stain will slowly be worn away with wear and tear.
PolyShades stain and polyurethane also allows you to easily change the color of your currently stained or varnished wood without stripping. Over old varnish you can change the color without removing the old finish or hiding the grain.
No, the stain will not penetrate the wood. From popularwoodworking.com : Use a coarse sandpaper, a sanding block or a power sander to strip the finish off the surface. Sand until the surface is smooth and most of the shiny surface is gone.
On standard work, mid - high end, if I must use a filler anywhere on the piece, I take some of the sanding dust I made sanding the piece, mix in a little yellow glue to make a paste, and if the piece is going to be stained, I mix in a little stain color and overfill the void with the mixture, then when I sand and stain
Roxil Wood Protection Cream Varnish typically requires multiple coats and meticulous surface preparation like sanding and polishing. Roxil Wood Protection Cream is easy to apply and requires minimal preparation. It can be applied directly to the wood surface using a brush or roller to save both time and effort.
Remove all dirt, oils, grease and wax with paint thinner or other appropriate cleaners/dewaxers. Fill openings and nail holes with filler. Sand along grain of the wood, with sandpaper grit and tools appropriate to the particular project. Vacuum clean and/or wipe surfaces with a tack rag.
In simple terms yes. Care must be taken however when applying the first coat of varnish over the stain. If using a brush or roller the first coat of varnish should be lightly applied and not overworked by repeated brushing or rolling.
