Apply stain liberally by spray, brush, pad or roller, followed by a brushing in the direction of the woods grain.
Use a paint pad applicator for a smooth, even finish and good coverage. An applicator attached to a pole is easier than using a brush to stain a large deck by hand, and more accurate than using a pressurized sprayer. You can use an airless paint sprayer to apply stain quicker than is possible with a roller or brush.
Be careful to keep the spray gun 12 inches away from the surface so you dont get stain bouncing back. Overlap each pass by 50% for best coverage. Since stain is thin you need to keep your arm moving at an even, consistent speed so you dont get runs or drips.
Its easy to breathe new life into your deck by applying a fresh coat of paint or stain. Make sure you use a Graco Magnum airless paint sprayer to refinish your deck so you can finish up to 10X faster than using a brush and roller and make the most of your summer.
For airless sprayers a tip between 0.011 0.015 is commonly used depending on whether it is a transparent or solid stain (with the larger sizes being used with solid stains). Air caps will be chosen based on the fan pattern and CFM that they use.
Can you mix stain with polyurethane? Of course you can.
Short Answer, Yes. But there are some other things to consider when using rollers or sprayers. Rollers are a great way to apply wood stain as well for the speed at which you can apply the stain.
The new #graco TrueCoat 360 Variable Speed is easy to use and comes with 2 spray tips for stain, great for decks, fences, outdoor furniture more.
