If the painted surface that lies beneath the solid stained coating ever decides to peel, it will do so and take the solid stain coating with it. But if the painted surface remains intact, the solid stain will stay on the painted surface for years to come without any detrimental effect.
Most people apply stain both to protect their decking from weather damage and to make the wood vibrant and beautiful. Without stain, the wood can fade under sunlight and moisture can seep into the wood pores. Over time, this degrades your decking, making it unsightly and weak.
Before You Begin Most stains require dry wood and a 24-hour window of dry weather in order to cure. Make sure you have all your tools and materials ready to go, just in case you have a short fair-weather window.
A FEW TIPS BEFORE YOU GET STARTED STAINING YOUR DECK Apply stain when air and wood surface temperatures are between 5090F. Avoid applying in direct sunlight. Dont apply stain if rain is in the forecast over the next 1224 hours. Test a small area first and let it dry to make sure youre pleased with the result.
Applying a deck stain in direct sun will cause the stain to dry to quickly and can result in premature stain failure. In the summer, stain your deck in the morning or evening so the deck surface isnt too hot. Remember, the surface temperature of the deck can be much hotter than the air temperature.
Before you apply stain, wait 4-8 weeks after your new deck is built. Start your project by sweeping away any leaves or other debris. Tip: Not sure how much stain you need for your deck?
Apply solid stains in thin coats and semi-transparent stains or clear sealers in even thinner coats. This prevents puddles that dont soak into the wood and cause the stain to flake off when dry. Whatever type of stain you use, apply two coats to ensure there are no missed spots and to get a more uniform finish.
Avoid the Cold If youre staining your deck in the spring or fall, wait for a day with temperatures above 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Also, check to see if freezing temperatures are in the forecast for that night. It can hinder the curing process if it drops below 32 degrees Fahrenheit before the stain has thoroughly dried.
