Typically, it is not recommended to put regular wood stain over paint, as it will not penetrate the surface. However, using a gel stain can work well, as it is designed to adhere to painted surfaces. Just make sure to use a gel stain specifically formulated for use over paint.
If your existing deck stain is: Light: Apply a similar or darker stain color without additional preparation required. Dark: This will be hard to cover with a lighter semi-transparent color, as the old/dark color will come through. If you want to lighten up the color of a dark deck, consider a lighter solid stain.
Do You Have to Sand Before Staining Wood? Wood needs to be sanded well before it can be stained. The process opens up the woods pores to better absorb the stain. It also smoothes away scratches in the surface which will only be enhanced by stain.
Using A Rag To Apply Stain However, it can also be a little messy, so you will definitely need some gloves. There are two basic methods for applying stain with a rag. For handrails and detail work, simply dip a rag into the stain and then dab and wipe it on.
Use a paint pad applicator for a smooth, even finish and good coverage. An applicator attached to a pole is easier than using a brush to stain a large deck by hand, and more accurate than using a pressurized sprayer. You can use an airless paint sprayer to apply stain quicker than is possible with a roller or brush.
One of the most important rules of staining in order to prevent lap marks is to apply material wet-on-wet. It is important to make sure that you maintain a wet edge by applying stain toward the area that is still not painted and then back into the just-painted surface.
Apply one coat of stain in long, even strokes. Usually, one coat will be enough. Use a paint brush to stain between cracks and in any problem areas. Once youre finished, clean the brushes and paint tray.
Deciding between brushing or rolling on the stain can be difficult when staining a deck. Both options have their pros and cons. Brushing offers greater control over where the stain is applied, allowing for a more precise finish. On the other hand, rolling can cover large areas quickly and efficiently.
