Dip the cloth into the stain and apply it all over the wood using small movements. Wait for the stain to soak into the wood and then wipe off the excess with a clean cloth. If you want to achieve a darker colour, consider applying multiple coats. Finish off by applying a wood finish for long-lasting protection.
A large synthetic, nylon, or polyester paint brush is a great tool for staining wood as it allows the stain to seep deep into the woods pores. Part of the reason the paintbrush is superior for staining wood is due to the back and forth motion that creates agitation allowing the wood to absorb more of the stain.
The ideal temperature range for application is between 50 and 80 degrees and it is important to choose a day when no rain is expected for 24 hours.
A FEW TIPS BEFORE YOU GET STARTED STAINING YOUR DECK Apply stain when air and wood surface temperatures are between 5090F. Avoid applying in direct sunlight. Dont apply stain if rain is in the forecast over the next 1224 hours. Test a small area first and let it dry to make sure youre pleased with the result.
Stain can be applied with a bristle brush, a foam brush, or a cloth. On woods with large, open pores, such as oak, mahogany and ash, increase your pressure to work the stain into the pores. Rubbing or brushing against the direction of the grain will help fill deep pores with stain.
Use a paint pad applicator for a smooth, even finish and good coverage. An applicator attached to a pole is easier than using a brush to stain a large deck by hand, and more accurate than using a pressurized sprayer. You can use an airless paint sprayer to apply stain quicker than is possible with a roller or brush.
Apply oil-based stains with a paintbrush or clean rag. Apply water-based stains with a foam brush or synthetic bristle brush. For deep grain woods, work the stain into the grain by working in a circular motion. Otherwise, apply the stain evenly in the direction of the wood grain.
The first and most obvious reason to roll on deck stain as opposed to brushing it on is that the former allows you to cover a much larger surface area in less time. Rollers are wider, more efficient, and easier to operate. Additionally, using a roller helps you achieve a smoother finish.
