Minwax presents just ask Bruce I have this old nightst and I want to make it beautiful but Iamp;#39;m pretty new at this so I figured Iamp;#39;d just ask Bruce glad you asked Dave the first step in any project is prepare the wood now I prefer to start by sanding with number 120 grit sandpaper and I finish with Number 220 grit always sanding in the direction of the grain of the wood after that I wipe off all the dust next using a natural bristle brush I apply a liberal coat of Minwax pre-stained wood conditioner now the wood conditioner will help the wood absorb your stain evenly and will prevent the wood from turning blotchy now allow the conditioner to remain on the wood from 5 to 15 minutes then wipe off off any conditioner it doesnamp;#39;t absorb and now youamp;#39;re ready to stain the first thing I want to do is stir the can thoroughly mixing in any of the pigments that may have settled to the bottom then with a natural bristle brush Iamp;#39;m going to work the stain into t

A surface that is too cold (as well as air temperatures that are too low) will interfere with coalescence (cure) of the coating, which can lead to premature adhesion failures (cracking and peeling) and less durability. A surface thats too hot to touch is generally too hot to stain.
The ideal temperature range for application is between 50 and 80 degrees and it is important to choose a day when no rain is expected for 24 hours.
No. If rain is forecasted, its worth holding off treating your deck until you know its going to be dry for a few days. Stains and oils penetrate wood best when its cool and dry. If it rains within 48 hours of applying a treatment, the water will soak into the wood, and try and displace the stain.
Use the right brush: Use a natural-bristle brush for oil stains and a synthetic-bristle brush for latex stains. Apply stain only at the proper temperature. For most stains, 70F is the optimum, with the safety range from 50-90F.
The Goldilocks Zone for Staining Your Deck Ultimately, the goal is to stain your deck when the following conditions are present: Its below 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Its above 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Its a cloudy day, or the deck is in the shade.
The average cost to stain a deck is $1.57 to $4.04 per square foot, with most homeowners paying someone $450 to $1,000 for materials and labor. Labor costs depend on the woods condition, if the deck has railings, and whether power washing, sanding, and stripping are required.
If your deck or patio measures up to 550 square feet, you will need to buy 2 gallons of stain. For very large decks and patios, up to 700 square feet, you will need 3 to 4 gallons of stain to complete the project.
Stain when the temperature is between 50 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Start staining early in the day. Stain dries quicker in higher temperatures in the midafternoon and parts of the project may dry faster than other areas resulting in a splotchy, uneven finish.
