Generally, employers should not request a Social Security number (SSN) on an employment application as the SSN is not directly related to an applicants ability to perform a specific job and applications are often viewed by individuals who do not have a need to know this information.
Social Security is financed through a dedicated payroll tax. Employers and employees each pay 6.2 percent of wages up to the taxable maximum of $168,600 (in 2024), while the self-employed pay 12.4 percent. The payroll tax rates are set by law, and for OASI and DI, apply to earnings up to a certain amount.
Just like the income tax, most people cant avoid paying Social Security taxes on their employment and self-employment income. There are, however, exemptions available to specific groups of taxpayers. If you fall under one of these categories, you can potentially save a docHub amount of money.

To apply for the SSN, students must (in order): Submit job offer letter on departmental letterhead from employing department or letter of affiliation/support from J-1 Program Advisor to the International Student Scholar Services (ISSS) The sample job offer letter may be copied onto letterhead.
