If you made a mistake in entering a social security number, a payers identification number, omitted a form, or misspelled a name, you can correct these errors and electronically file your tax return again. Unfortunately, there are other errors that will cause you to have to file your return by mail.
Make sure your check or money order includes the following information: Your name and address. Daytime phone number. Social Security number (the SSN shown first if its a joint return) or employer identification number. Tax year. Related tax form or notice number.
If your W-2 is incorrect Ask your employer to correct the error. If your employer doesnt correct it by the end of February, you should either: Call us at 800-829-1040. Make an appointment at an IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center.
The employer is instructed to provide correct information to the SSA within 60 days. An employer may be fined $50 by the IRS for each time incorrect information is provided. The IRS may also levy a $50 fine on any employee who does not furnish a correct SSN to his or her employer.
You may have thought that a Social Security number was an absolute requirement to file a tax return, but its not. The U.S. government issues Social Security numbers for citizens as well as for noncitizens who request a number to work or attend school.
Employers are required to correct errors on Forms W-2 as quickly as possible. The penalty for filing an incorrect W-2 with the SSA increases over time. To avoid penalties, a Form W-2c is generally required within 30 days of becoming aware of an error.
If you have filed your return using a W-2 that was not correct because the Social Security number (SSN) was wrong, then you need to request a corrected W-2 from that employer as soon as possible.
If you find errors on your W-2, contact your employers payroll or human resources department, tell them about the problem, and ask them to issue you a corrected W-2. Your employer should correct errors on Form W-2 and send a W-2C, Corrected Wage and Tax Statement form as quickly as possible.
