In general, a CBP- assigned number will be issued to foreign businesses or individuals, provided no IRS employer identification number or SSN exists for the requester. A requester can choose to keep using the CBP-assigned number even if the individual subsequently acquires a SSN.
SSNs are used to verify the identity of players for regulatory purposes. In addition, customers will be asked to complete an IRS Forms W-9 or W-8BEN after a Big Win. This information will be used by DraftKings to prepare informational reporting tax forms (i.e. IRS Form W-2G).
In order to ship merchandise into the US, customs requires the owner of record to have a US Federal Tax ID number (also known as an Employer ID #) with a US mailing address.
CBP uses either a EIN or SSN, issued by the IRS, to identify the ultimate consignee: Employer Identification Number (EIN): Issued to business entities. Social Security Number (SSN): Issued to individuals.
The company needs your SSN to pay their portion of your taxes from your pay.
Because many foreign merchants are aware that CBP requires an identification number for the ultimate importer for formal entries, they will often request the purchasers social security number to include on export documents that the broker will subsequently rely on to prepare the CBP entry.
Also, be careful about sharing your number, even when youre asked for it. You should ask why your number is needed, how itll be used, and what will happen if you refuse. If you know your Social Security information has been compromised, you can request to Block Electronic Access.
However, to mitigate any shipment delays or returns, FedEx encourages shippers to provide the Ultimate Consignee ID number (EIN or SSN) for all U.S.-bound shipments, regardless of value.
