Youll need to lie flat and keep your leg straight for two to six hours to prevent bleeding (less time if they used a plug). Dont raise your head more than 30 degrees (two pillows high).
Avoid dangling your arm. Avoid pushing, pulling or lifting anything over 10 pounds (4.5 kilograms. Avoid strenuous exercise such as running, cycling or swimming for 1 week. You may drive after 2 days unless you have had a recent heart attack.
Complete recovery takes a week or less. Keep the area where the catheter was inserted dry for 24 to 48 hours. If the catheter was inserted into your arm, recovery is often faster.
Cardiac catheterization is a safe procedure when performed by an experienced medical team. But, some possible risks include bleeding, infection, and blood clots. A heart attack or a stroke can happen in very rare situations. But, remember, its done in a closely supervised setting in a hospital.
The whole cardiac catheterization procedure takes about 30 to 60 minutes. Youll be given medicine to help you relax, but youll be awake during the procedure. First, the doctor will insert an intravenous, or IV line into one of the blood vessels in your groin or neck.
Most people can return to their normal activities the day after the procedure, though youll want to avoid strenuous exercise and lifting heavy objects for two weeks. Some additional time may be needed if a treatment was done during your cardiac catheterization.
If a blocked artery is found during cardiac catheterization, the doctor may treat the blockage right away. Sometimes a stent is placed to keep the artery open. Ask your doctor whether this is a possibility before your cardiac catheterization begins.
