Many experts suggest installing the EGT probe in the exhaust manifold before the turbo for three reasons: 1) The farther the EGT probe is away from the manifold, the greater the lag time response to dynamic changes in temperature.
The depth will depend on the type of induction youre running in naturally aspirated engines the probe needs to sit in the centre of the pipe while in engines with forced induction the probe will be no more than 6mm into the pipe, so much shallower than in N/A engines.
A general consensus would be 2 inch to 4 inches from the cylinder head if practical. But its your car so its your decision. For turbo engines be sure to CLEAN ALL METAL FILINGS out of the exhaust manifold. Metal filings will damage the turbo impeller if they go through the turbo.
Excessive EGT can also cause exhaust manifold and cylinder head cracking. Exhaust valves can fail from high EGT as well. Among the first engine parts to suffer damage will be those made of aluminum since aluminum has a lower softening and melting temperature than steel or cast iron.
A properly functioning PTC (Positive Temperature Coefficient) EGTS temperature detection range is from -70//+900C. At room temperature (20C) it should give a reading of approx. 220.
A general consensus would be 2 inch to 4 inches from the cylinder head if practical. But its your car so its your decision. For turbo engines be sure to CLEAN ALL METAL FILINGS out of the exhaust manifold.
If everything is working properly, 1250 to 1300 F. is a safe turbine inlet temperature, even for sustained running, mile after mile. Above 1300 F. things can start to get edgy. Remember, excessive EGT damage is cumulative.
2 to 4 inches are recommended. Closer will shorten the life of the probes flame-front is at 1.5. Farther cylinder head? (Up to 6 inches) is okay.
