Your CPAP Headgear Is Too Loose or Too Tight It may seem unusual that over-tightening your straps could lead to an air leak, but many CPAP mask cushions achieve their seal by inflating. An overly tight mask may stop the cushion from inflating all the way, preventing a good seal.
Tips for Minimizing Leaks Proper Mask Fit: Ensure your mask fits snugly yet comfortably around your face. Consult your doctor or a sleep therapist for fitting guidance. Maintain Cleanliness: Regularly clean your mask and tubing to prevent air leaks and ensure optimal performance.

Common problems with CPAP include a leaky mask, trouble falling asleep, a stuffy nose and a dry mouth.
Maintain Cleanliness. Keep your mask clean daily to prevent dirt, oil, and grime buildup that can compromise the seal. To help keep a good seal, clean your mask, specifically the cushion, daily with warm water, mild soapy water. For more information: The Dos and Donts of CPAP cleaning.
Try adjusting pads and straps to get a better fit. If the mask fits over your nose, make sure it doesnt sit too high on the bridge of your nose, which can direct air into your eyes. You may need to ask your CPAP supplier to help you find a different size mask, particularly if your weight has changed a lot.
Sounds occur when there is a leak at the mask site, when the seal is not quite complete, usually near the eye or mouth, or from the exhalation port. The most common type of leak problem concerning a CPAP mask is a seal leak. This occurs when the air inside the mask is leaking out between the mask and the facial skin.
Your doctor will prescribe your air pressure setting. But studies show that high air pressure can cause masks to break their seal, which leads to leakage. Talk with your doctor about adjusting your air pressure settings. Also, if your CPAP machine has a ramp feature, use it.
