The following conditions are associated with elevated maternal serum AFP levels: Neural tube defects such as spina bifida and anencephaly. Omphalocele. Gastroschisis. Sacrococcygeal teratoma. Placental abnormalities. Cystic hygroma.
Alpha fetoprotein (AFP) is a protein produced by the liver and yolk sac of a fetus. AFP has no normal function in adults. The alpha fetoprotein test (AFP) is a blood test performed to measure, diagnose, or monitor fetal distress or fetal abnormalities. It can also detect some liver disorders and some cancers in adults.
What happens during an AFP test? A health care professional will take a blood sample from a vein in your arm, using a small needle. After the needle is inserted, a small amount of blood will be collected into a test tube or vial.
High levels of AFP can be a sign of cancer of the liver, ovaries or testicles. An AFP tumor marker test cannot be used by itself to screen for or diagnose cancer. Thats because other conditions can increase AFP levels, including liver diseases that arent cancer.
No special preparation is necessary before an AFP test. A healthcare professional will use a small needle to withdraw blood from a vein, usually in your arm or hand. A laboratory specialist will analyze the sample. Results are typically available within one to two weeks.
Stool Collection and Storage procedures a. Collect two adults thumb-sized stool specimens (at least 24 hours apart) from each AFP case within 14 days from paralysis onset. b. For watery stool specimen, collect at least 5 ml of the stool specimen.
AFP is a protein that is present in patients with liver disease. AFP is also a tumor marker and may be used to see if a patient has liver cancer. (Liver cancer is also called hepatocellular carcinoma).
What is it used for? An AFP blood test is used during pregnancy to check the babys risk of birth defects and genetic disorders, such as neural tube defects or Down syndrome.
