Punctuation. When quotation marks are around a phrase spanning two or more captions, place quotation marks at the beginning of each caption, except for the caption containing the end of the quote - it should only contain a closing quotation mark.
Citing a quote within a quote is as simple as 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. List the original authors last name. Include the date of publication of the original. Add as cited in then the name of the work. Follow with the publishing date of the cited work. List the page the information can be found on.
There are three strategies you can use to embed quotations: set off quotations, build in quotations, or introduce quotations with a colon. MLA requires you to use the abbreviation qtd. in (quoted in) before the indirect source you cite in your parenthetical reference. You may document the original source in a note if needed. For example, Louis Zukofskys article from 1931 is being quoted in Bonnie Costellos 1981 book on page 78.
