Put quotation marks (single or double) around the exact words of a direct quotation. Inside a quotation, use a suspension to mark omitted material and square brackets to mark inserted material.
There are three strategies you can use to embed quotations: set off quotations, build in quotations, or introduce quotations with a colon. Set-off quotations are set off from the sentence with a comma. Capitalize the first word of the quote. Notice the signal phrases (in bold print) used in the following examples.
The use of quotation marks, also called inverted commas, is very slightly complicated by the fact that there are two types: single quotes (` ) and double quotes ( ).
When you quote, you include the words and ideas of others in your text exactly as they have expressed them. You signal this inclusion by placing quotation marks ( ) around the source authors words and providing an in-text citation after the quotation.
A quotation, or quote, is an exact repeat of another sources spoken or written words. Quotation marks separate a quotation from the rest of a writers text so that a reader knows which words are not the writers own (or are from a different work by the same writer).
An exact quote should be in quotation marks ( ), or if the quotation is 40 words or more, should be formatted as a block quotation. Then you put an In-Text Citation right after the quotation to show where the quote came from.
To signal to your reader that a section of text is a quotation of someone elses work, you normally use quotation marks. These could be single or double quotation marks, depending on the referencing or house style used in your subject.
When are quotation marks used? Quotation marks are used to indicate a direct quote, transcribe speech to text, signify titles of small works like poems, show that the validity of a word is doubted, discuss words as words without referencing their intended meaning, and to set apart nicknames from formal names.
