When you use or present information and ideas from other sources, or analyze sources using direct quotes, citations give credit to the ideas of others and make you a more credible author. Citations can also indicate to your reader that youre writing in an academic genre that provides information to help them find the same sources again. Quotations within a Quotation Use single quotation marks to enclose quotes within another quotation. The reporter told me, When I interviewed the quarterback, he said they simply played a better game.
Citing a quote within a quote is as simple as 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. List the original authors last name. Include the date of publication of the original. Add as cited in then the name of the work. Follow with the publishing date of the cited work. List the page the information can be found on.
When you are ending a sentence with a direct quote that ends in a question mark, you will need to have a period after the parenthetical citation. Since it is a direct quote, you will need to have a citation to show exactly where you got the quote.
In-text citations generally contain the authors last name (surname) and page location of cited material placed within parentheses at the end of a sentence.
An exact quote should be in quotation marks ( ), or if the quotation is 40 words or more, should be formatted as a block quotation. Then you put an In-Text Citation right after the quotation to show where the quote came from.
Quotation marks, double () or single (), are generally used for direct quotes, certain titles, and words used in a special manner. Quotation marks are ALWAYS used in pairs, one at the beginning of the quoted text and one at the end. The same rule applies to titles and words used in a special sense or for emphasis.
Place a question mark or exclamation point within closing quotation marks if the punctuation applies to the quotation itself. Place the punctuation outside the closing quotation marks if the punctuation applies to the whole sentence. Phillip asked, Do you need this book?
Authors and readers often ask how to deal with references that already contain punctuationfor example, a title that ends in a question mark or exclamation point. The short answer is, keep the original punctuation and do not add any extra.
