If an original source is unavailable, and quoted in must be resorted to, mention the original author and date in the text, and cite the secondary source in the reference list entry. The in-text citation would include the words quoted in (see Section 15.56: Quoted in in author-date references).
Tell the audience your source before you use the information (the opposite of in-text citations). Do not say, quote, unquote when you offer a direct quotation. Use brief pauses instead. Provide enough information about each source so that your audience could, with a little effort, find them.
There are no official limits to quotation length, though any quotations that are more than four lines should be formatted as a separate block quote. However, it is generally better to paraphrase the sources you cite rather than use direct quotations.
There are some general rules for using direct quotes: Use double inverted commas to signify the exact words that you have used. Keep them short (usually less than three lines of typed text) Just before the full stop of the sentence in which you have used a direct quote, place the in-text reference.
A quote can be split by the attribution the who said. You have to decide whether the 2nd half is a full sentence or not. If the 2nd half is a continuation of the quote, then dont use a capital. If the 2nd half is a sentence by itself, then use a capital.
Use single quotation marks to enclose quotes within another quotation. The reporter told me, When I interviewed the quarterback, he said they simply played a better game.
Quote context If the context of your quote might be unclear, you may add a few words to provide clarity. Enclose the added material in brackets. Added Material: The quarterback told the reporter, Its quite simple. They [the other team] played a better game, scored more points, and thats why we lost.
When you embed a direct quotation from your sources, you incorporate it smoothly and naturally into your own writing. Here is a good example of an embedded quotation: The mayor argues that Cincinnati needs to attract new restaurants into the downtown area to provide more dining options for city residents.
