In most forms of academic writing, direct quotations cannot stand alone as their own sentences. Instead, they need to be embedded into your own sentences so that they flow naturally within the writing.
Quotation marks, double () or single (), are generally used for direct quotes, certain titles, and words used in a special manner.
There are three ways to introduce quotations or paraphrases: You can use a full sentence followed by a colon to introduce a quotation. You can use a lead-in naming the author or character, followed by a comma. You can also begin a sentence with your own words and complete it with quoted words.
Another way to block quote in Word is to use the paragraph settings in the menu: Once the text to be quoted is selected, you right click on the text, and choose Paragraph. Under the Indentation option, you can select the appropriate indent size. Press OK, and repeat for each quote.
In American English, use double quotation marks for quotations and single quotation marks for quotations within quotations. In British English, use single quotation marks for quotations and double quotation marks for quotations within quotations.
Quotations within a Quotation Use single quotation marks to enclose quotes within another quotation. The reporter told me, When I interviewed the quarterback, he said they simply played a better game.
There are three strategies you can use to embed quotations: set off quotations, build in quotations, or introduce quotations with a colon. Set-off quotations are set off from the sentence with a comma. Capitalize the first word of the quote. Notice the signal phrases (in bold print) used in the following examples.
When you quote directly from a source, enclose the quoted section in quotation marks. Add an in-text citation at the end of the quote with the author name and page number, like this: Heres a direct quote (Smith 8).
