- [Tutor] A Pap test is a test to screen for cervical cancer or other cervical diseases. Your cervix is the lower part of the uterus at the top of your vagina. A Pap test is used to check your cervix for abnormal cells. Abnormal cells can sometimes turn into cervical cancer if they arent treated. A Pap test can be part of a pelvic exam. First, your healthcare provider will place an instrument called a speculum into your vagina. The speculum will be opened so that your cervix can be seen. Next, your provider will use a scraper or brush to gently collect cells from your cervix. Your cells will be examined at a lab under a microscope to see if any of them are abnormal. It usually takes about one to three weeks to get your test results. If you have questions about this test or your test results, talk to your provider.

Abnormal Pap test results: An abnormal test result may also be called a positive test result. Some of the cells of the cervix look different from the normal cells. An abnormal test result does not mean you have cancer. Your health care provider will recommend monitoring, more testing, or treatment.
Do not use douche, bubble bath, or use vaginal medicine for three days before Pap test. You may shower, but do not tub bathe 24 hours before the Pap test. Inform your clinician about additional medications/conditions that may interfere with an accurate test.
Cause. Most abnormal Pap tests are caused by HPV infections. Other types of infection—such as those caused by bacteria, yeast, or protozoa (Trichomonas)—sometimes lead to minor changes on a Pap test called atypical squamous cells.
No screening test is 100% effective an HPV infection or abnormal cells can sometimes be missed (a 'false negative' result) abnormal cells can develop and turn into cancer in between screening tests. there is a small chance that a result says abnormal cells are found when the cervix is normal (a 'false positive' result)
Mild inflammation was defined as less than 30 inflammatory cells/high-power field; moderate inflammation was defined as 30 to 100 inflammatory cells/high-power field; and severe inflammation was defined as more than 100 inflammatory cells/high-power field.
It's also possible to get a “false positive” Pap result. The best way to avoid a false positive test is by avoiding certain things in the days leading up to your Pap smear, including tampons, sexual intercourse, and feminine products, including creams, suppositories, and sprays.
Colposcopy. If you have certain symptoms that could mean cancer, if your Pap test shows abnormal cells, or if your HPV test is positive, you will most likely need to have a test called colposcopy. You will lie on the exam table as you do with a pelvic exam.
The Pap test (or Pap smear) looks for precancers, cell changes on the cervix that might become cervical cancer if they are not treated appropriately.
Avoid sexual intercourse, douching, or using spermicidal preparations or any kind of vaginal medicine for two days prior to your Pap smear appointment. These substances may obscure or wash away any abnormal cells. Don't schedule your Pap smear when you expect to be menstruating.
Conclusion: Most patients with inflammatory smear results are managed by their general practitioner without reference to specialist services. Many patients are not investigated for infection but treatment often includes medication which covers the most likely or potentially serious genital pathogens.
