Depictions of the head and bust of the deceased, the portraits are executed either on wooden tablets (about 17 by 9 inches [about 43 by 23 cm]) and placed under the bandages covering the mummys face, or on the linen shroud itself. They are painted in tempera or in pigments mixed with liquid beeswax.
This specific mummification practice was concentrated primarily in and around the Fayum Basin (the region that gives the associated portraits their name) and dates to between the 1st and 3rd century AD. About 900 of these portraits are known, and all but a tiny fraction of them have been removed from their mummies.
Fayum portraits unite two different forms of symbolic immortality. Mummies preserve an individuals body, while portraits immortalize how they appeared in life. Egypt, Portrait of a Man with a Mole on His Nose, 130150 CE, Roman Period. The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The Egyptians drew scenes with a two-dimensional perspective. You will see people standing sideways limbs, face and waste in profile but with the shoulders and eyes to the front. The answer is simple: they sought to provide the most representational aspects of each person rather than aspiring for realism.
This style of Roman-era mummy portrait has been found all across Egypt, but is most common in the Faiyum Basin area, particularly around the rich Roman city of Antinoopolis, whose upper-class inhabitants would have been able to afford the expensive mummification.
The portraits covered the faces of bodies that were mummified for burial. Extant examples indicate that they were mounted into the bands of cloth that were used to wrap the bodies. Almost all have now been detached from the mummies.
The Fayum are realistic painted mummy portraits of men, women and children, of all ages from Roman Egypt, between the 1st and 3rd centuries A.D., possibly the 4th c. AD., and they were placed mainly over the face (a few full-length ones are also preserved).
ing to the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, sculptures displaying true likeness were a rarety in Ancient Egypt. Overall, Roman portrait sculptures are claimed to be more reliable than their Greek or Egyptian counterparts, though admittedly, there is no source for this claim outside of Wikipedia.
