If you have indeed suffered an ACL tear, the treatment depends on the severity of the tear and your normal activity level. Some ACL tears do have the ability to heal on their own. If we decide that you dont need surgery to repair your ACL, treatment includes: Rest and elevation of your leg.
If nothing is done, the ACL injury may turn into chronic ACL deficiency. Your knee may become more and more unstable and may give out more often. The abnormal sliding within the knee also can hurt cartilage. It can trap and damage the menisci in the knee and can also lead to early osteoarthritis.
Direct ACL insertion is located anteriorly, on the medial surface of the lateral femoral condyle. It is connected to a bone depression parallel and immediately posterior to the intercondylar lateral ridge and to the medial surface of the lateral femoral condyle.
The overall ACL attachment center is 6.1 mm posterior to the lat- eral intercondylar ridge, 1.7 mm proximal to the bifurcate ridge, 14.7 mm proximal to the distal cartilage margin, and 8.5 mm anterior to the pos- terior cartilage margin [1].
Surgery for an ACL Injury We consider non-surgical treatments first, but if the tear is complete and the knee is unstable, or the knee doesnt heal with non-surgical treatment, surgery may be necessary. The ACL cannot heal on its own because there is no blood supply to this ligament.
If youve torn your ACL, the recommendation is to ice, elevate and rest your knee to control swelling, inflammation and pain. For at least the first 24 hours after your injury or until severe inflammation is controlled, ice and elevate your leg at a level above your heart while lying down.
How long does it take to recover from a torn ACL? It usually takes six to nine months to recover from a torn ACL. Competitive athletes may need a little longer than this to heal fully before theyre cleared to return to their sport.
But the new research, which focused on 80 injured knees, found that many torn ACLs can apparently knit themselves back together and heal naturally reducing the need for expensive and often painful surgery.
