bmi or body mass index is a measure of a persons body fat based on height and weight and a high bmi can increase a persons risk for certain diseases it is calculated by taking your weight in kilograms and dividing it by your height in meters squared if youre using pounds for weight and feet or inches for height then we need to do some conversions lets say someone is 175 pounds and 5 foot 9. to convert pounds to kilograms one pound equals 0.4536 kilograms so you multiply by 0.453 so 175 pounds times 0.4536 equals 79.38 kilograms to convert feet to meters first convert feet to inches 12 inches in a foot so 5 times 12 equals 60 inches plus 9 inches equals a total of 69 inches one inch equals 0.0254 meters so multiply by 0.0254 so 69 times 0.0254 equals 1.75 meters now we have all that we need for the formula 79.38 kilograms divided by 1.7526 meters squared equals a bmi of 25.8 and here is the formula for bmi using common us metrics of pounds and inches here is a chart listing the weig

With the Health app on your iPhone, you can easily calculate your BMI and keep track of your progress as you aim for a healthier life.
Because BMI does not measure body fat directly, it should not be used as a diagnostic tool. Instead, BMI should be used as a measure to track weight status in populations and as a screening tool to identify potential weight problems in individuals. What is next for BMI research?
BMI (body mass index), which is based on the height and weight of a person, is an inaccurate measure of body fat content and does not take into account muscle mass, bone density, overall body composition, and racial and sex differences, say researchers from the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania.
Studies have also shown that BMI can mislabel a persons health when compared to objective measures, like results from tests for cholesterol and blood-sugar levels. Despite assumptions weve come to accept as facts, the evidence linking weight and health is inconsistent, Russell says.
BMI isnt always the best measure of health Differences in BMI between individual adults of the same age and sex are usually due to body fat, however there are many exceptions to this rule, which is why a BMI figure may not always be accurate. BMI calculations will overestimate the amount of body fat for: body builders.
BMI also varies (because average body fatness varies) among people of different ages and whether they are active or sedentary. That means it can be misleading in some cases. For instance, an athlete with much more muscle than fat can have a BMI in the overweight range.
Data from this study suggest that the optimum range of BMI levels for older adults is 3132 and 2728 kg/m2 for female and male, respectively.
BMI Chart Find your height on the side (in metres on the left and in feet on the right) and draw a horizontal line across the chart. Find your weight (in kilograms across the bottom of in pounds across the top) and draw a vertical line across the chart. The shaded area where the 2 lines meet is your BMI.
