Style rule: The items in an outline should have parallel structure. Formal outlines use complete sentences. Less formal outlines can use phrases, but you shouldnt mix up sentences and phrses in an outline.
To format an outline in APA style, you should use Roman numerals for the main headings, capital letters for subheadings, and Arabic numerals for sub-subheadings, if necessary. Additionally, each level of the outline should be indented to show the hierarchy of the information.
The most common order in outlines is to go from the general to the specific. This means you begin with a general idea and then support it with specific examples. All outlines should begin with a thesis statement of summarizing sentence. This thesis sentence presents the central idea of the paper.
Basic outline form The main ideas take Roman numerals (I, II, ) and should be in all-caps. Sub-points under each main idea take capital letters (A, B, ) and are indented. Sub-points under the capital letters, if any, take Arabic numerals (1, 2, ) and are further indented.
Basic outline form Sub-points under each main idea take capital letters (A, B, ) and are indented. Sub-points under the capital letters, if any, take Arabic numerals (1, 2, ) and are further indented. Sub-points under the numerals, if any, take lowercase letters (a, b, ) and are even further indented.
In all formal outlines, place a period after each heading and sub-heading. In the topic outline, do not punctuate the entries, unless the punctuation is intrinsic to the entry. In the sentence outline, punctuate all sentences as any complete sentence would be, with a period, question mark, or exclamation point.
How do I write an outline? Identify your topic or thesis statement. Decide what points you would like to discuss during your paper. Put your points in logical, numerical order so that each point connects back to your main point. Write possible transitions between paragraphs.
Punctuation and Capitalization In a sentence outline, punctuate every heading just as you would the sentences in your paper: begin with a capital letter and end with a period. Except for proper nouns, the words in the heading are not capitalized (a heading is not a title).
