The PUTLOG statement writes a message that you specify to the SAS log. The PUTLOG statement is also helpful when you use macro-generated code because you can send output to the SAS log without affecting the current file destination.
NOTE- text displays a message in the SAS log in blue text, without including the keyword NOTE. data L; putlog NOTE: This is my note message in blue text; putlog NOTE- This is the second line of my note message; run; The keyword and text must be enclosed in single or double quotation marks.
Whereas the PUT statement can be used to write to any open file, the PUTLOG statement always writes to the log. It is dependable. Suppose you are writing a SAS macro that other people will use. If you use the PUTLOG statement, your message will always appear in the log.
This PUT statement specifies to print the variable name and value of variable x to the SAS log. Additional PUT statements request the same information for variables y and z .
The PUT statement writes a variable value, inserts a single blank, and then writes the next value. Missing values for numeric variables are written as a single period. Character values are left-aligned in the field; leading and trailing blanks are removed.
USING A PUT STATEMENT TO ADD ERRORS AND WARNINGS TO THE LOG Its easy to add ERROR and WARNING statements to the SAS log. Many of us have used PUT within a data step to write a message to the log. Any time we type WARNING: with all capitals and the colon, anything else on that line in the log will be colored green.
PUT statement is for writing information to a file (or the SAS log or output destination). It has a robust syntax that allows writing data in many ways. PUT() function is for applying a format to a value to convert it into a character string. You can use it in expressions or an assignment statement.
You can use a format to control how SAS prints the variable values. The PUT statement uses the format that follows the variable name to write each value. With formatted output, SAS does not automatically add blanks between values.
