What is a motif? A motif is a repeated patternan image, sound, word, or symbol that comes back again and again within a particular story. Ok, thats simple enough. The larger question is WHY? A repeated pattern or motif can do several things: First and foremost, it draws our attention to it. If you see something repeating, underline it and consider it carefully. Ask yourself: WHY does the author want me to notice this image or pattern? A motif can highlight something about a character, to help us understand them better, or it can help to establish the mood of the story. Often, motifs reinforce the themes of the story. To be clear, motif is not the same as themebut motifs can be the breadcrumbs that lead us to discover the theme, or support and reinforce it. Finally, motifs can evoke other moments in the story to remind us of the connection between scenes. Lets look at a couple examples for a better sense of what this means on the page. Examples of this motif include Romeo comparing Juliet to the sun, the two of them discussing the light of the moon, descriptions of their love as a lightning strike, and the Friar comparing their love to fire and gunpowder. Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck: the motif of soft things returns over and over in the novel.
A motif is a symbolic image or idea that appears frequently in a story. Motifs can be symbols, sounds, actions, ideas, or words. Motifs strengthen a story by adding images and ideas to the theme present throughout the narrative.
A motif can highlight something about a character, to help us understand them better, or it can help to establish the mood of the story. Often, motifs reinforce the themes of the story.
Incorporate motifs into your outline Outlining your story can also help with motifs. Look at the main events in your story (this is the plot). Then, take in the big picture (this is the theme). Next, think of recurring elements that you can include in the main events that will point to the big picture.
Developing a Motif in Music Start by establishing a key and a chord progression. Next, improvise a melody using the notes in your chosen key and play around with the number of notes, their intervals, order and rhythm.
Motifs direct readers attention to larger themes and engage them on an intuitive level. They are great tools for creating depth in your writing.
A motif might be something like an object, a piece of music, a texture, a color, particular images, or even repeated words. The word motif comes from the French and means pattern, and so motifs will always be recurring elements that give a pattern effect to the story.
When a motif works on multiple levels--telegraphing the inner desires or fears of characters, setting mood, and conveying the theme--it can make the story resonate deeply. Not every story lends itself to the use of motif.
