Peaks get shifted towards higher binding energy side. This charging effect has to be corrected. Normally for low charging, it is charge referenced by C1s at 284.8 eV and shifting the whole spectrum ingly. Charge correction is done by electron flood source by supplying low energy electrons externally.
Appearing at 285 eV, the C 1s envelope does not overlap with most other XPS signals. Carbon in the C 1s envelope is chemically shifted over quite a wide range (10 eV) by the elements it binds to, which allows effective peak fitting and oxidation state identification.

Charging Effects in X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy When X-ray photons strike a surface, they cause the emission of electrons. This, of course, is the basis of the XPS technique. If the surface is electrically insulating, then the emission of electrons causes a positive charge to accumulate at the surface.
In XPS spectra of materials, all binding energies should be corrected using a standard. Usually, carbon element with binding energy of C 1s = 284.6 eV is used as an internal standard. You should shift the binding energies of your samples based on this value.
Charge correction determines based on the furnace parameters, actual furnace weight and the alloy whether or not correction is needed (and possible). The operator still has the possibility to fine tune the proposal.
