Some principles for effective marking Be clear about the purpose of your marking. One of the main points of confusion (well it certainly confuses me) is what exactly we mean by the term, marking. Effective marking includes detail and rarely needs praise. Do your marking as quickly as possible. Make marking manageable.
Marking criteria outline the knowledge, skills and application you expect the student to demonstrate at the completion of an assessment task. They should not simply restate the assessment tasks but articulate the learning required to achieve the subject learning outcomes.
A mark is the level of achievement against specified criteria for an assessment item (e.g. a mark of 30/40 for an assessment). A grade is the overall level of achievement for a course, usually determined by combining the marks of the individual assessment items that make up the course.
Marking and feedback: ensures that teachers and parents understand where pupils are with their learning and what they need to do to improve further; informs interventions to make sure that pupils progress is on track; and. supports pupils evaluation of their own learning.
Effective marking is an essential part of the education process. At its heart, it is an interaction between teacher and pupil: a way of acknowledging pupils work, checking the outcomes and making decisions about what teachers and pupils need to do next, with the primary aim of driving pupil progress.
Candidates who fail to docHub the minimum standard for Pass at Level 1 will be unclassified (U). Only subjects in which grades Distinction* at Level 2 to Pass at Level 1 are attained will be recorded on certificates.
The grading system varies slightly between universities, but generally, a score of 70 or above is considered a First-class Honours degree, 60-69 is an Upper Second-class Honours degree, 50-59 is a Lower Second-class Honours degree, 40-49 is a Third-class Honours degree, and below 40 is a Fail.
