I was thinking that I could run through some slides I made with you to explain how to mark commingled documents. Dont worry, all examples and illustrations in my presentation are unclassified. There are a few things to keep in mind when marking documents that contain both CUI and classified information. First, as a best practice, you should endeavor to keep CUI and classified information separate from one another within the document to facilitate information sharing and derivative use. Second, it is vital that these documents be properly marked to ensure that CUI is not unnecessarily prevented from being shared and that classified information is not shared by mistake, therefore these documents must be marked to ensure that holders can distinguish between Uncontrolled Unclassified Information, Controlled Unclassified Information, and classified i

Standard markings are required for all documents that contain originally classified information. The information is to be shown using these marking elements: banner lines, portion marks, agency, office of origin, date of origin, and classification authority block (OCA or derivative).
Every portion, paragraph, subparagraph, section, or subsection must be marked to show the highest level of classification that it contains: (TS) for Top Secret, (S) for Secret, or (C) for Confidential. If a portion contains no classified information, it should be marked with a (U) for Unclassified.
Security Marking. Definitions: The means used to associate a set of security attributes with objects in a human-readable form, to enable organizational process-based enforcement of information security policies.
Portion markings identify the information that must be protected and the level of protection that is required. Documents that are not portion marked shall not be used as source documents for derivatively classified documents.
Your name and email address are not portions that must be marked. The subject line is a portion and must be marked, even though it appears outside the body area of the email. The banner line is already marked. This sentence is a portion and must be marked.
Marking is the principal way of letting information holders know the specific protection requirements. for that information. Markings, designations, and electronic labeling serve several purposes; specifically, they: Alert holders to the presence of classified information and or controlled unclassified information.
➢ Conspicuously place the overall classification at the top and bottom of the page. ➢ If the document contains more than one page, place the overall marking at the top and bottom of the outside of the front cover, on the title page, on the first page, and on the outside of the back cover (if any).
Portion markings consist of the letters (U) for unclassified, (C) for Confidential, (S) for Secret, and (TS) for Top Secret. b. (U) These abbreviations are placed, in parentheses, before the portion, or fter the title to which they apply.
